2008

On January 25, 2008, in the 25th round, the FEMA FIRE-ACT Assistance to Firefighters Grant program awarded the EFD $59,161.00.  This money is earmarked for "Operations and Safety".  The amount has been decreased by the federal government by $12,000 to $47,161.00.  The money will be used to enhance our interoperability with our mutual aid partners by purchasing radios.  A new fixed air cascade/compressor will be purchased for refilling SCBA.

Unofficial 2007 Year End Report of our Fire Department:
In 2007 we again responded to over 6700 calls, and the upward trend over the past decade may be stabilizing. While that may be good news to some, overall fire-loss was well in excess of $1.1 million dollars. Unfortunately, one civilian life was lost due to fire.  This number would surely be higher if not for our aggressive efforts and effective rescues. We continue to operate with insufficient staffing (16 members on duty daily) and increased responsibility.

Fire prevention work, although the benefits are less tangible, is also saving civilian lives and making our job safer. 27 Firefighters sustained injuries in the course of their duties, and 11 civilians were injured due to fire.  The majority of our fires started in the kitchen, and over 75% of our CO alarm runs had confirmed carbon monoxide present.

The 80 members of our department logged almost 10,000 training hours.

We are pleased to announce that the EFD has been named to receive FEMA FIRE-ACT Grant money...more

Federal Grants
Following the loss of $1,000,000 in SAFER Grant (hiring) money, the EFD's application for Fire-ACT (equipment, training etc.) was not awarded any money this year.  This federal grant money has been the overwhelming source of funding for nearly all of our tools and equipment we have acquired since the program's inception in 2001.  With similar communities in our area receiving awards of $50,000 to $1,000,000  (yes, one-million dollars) our leadership cannot afford to let FY 2007 be a similar disaster.

The city administration has presented legislation that would permit lateral hiring and possibly a regional eligibility list.  Our position is that we need to hire the most capable, qualified, and motivated candidate for the job regardless of ethnicity.  Furthermore, our last Civil Service test enabled experienced firefighters to get age credit allowing them to take the test even though they may have exceeded the maximum age limit.

Photo Gallery for DJUNK retirement party here

The new E-2 arrived on 7/3/06 and is currently in service at Station 2.

It is a KME Predator with a 2000 GPM Hale pump, 500 gallon water tank, and a Cummins/Allison drive-train.  This truck represents the city's first purchase of a fire apparatus since 1998 and will enable the 1990 Pierce Arrow (111,000+ miles) to serve as a back-up ridding the department of the dilapidated E-6 a 1981 Sutphen pumper with an open rear cab.  The jaws and other heavy rescue gear have been moved from L-1 at Station 1 to E-2.  photo gallery & specs.  Thank you to all who made this purchase possible including the Fire Administration, City Administration and Council, and the members of L-337 who put in the time to research and plan the purchase.
