EFD nets over $90,000 through FEMA Fire-ACT grant.
On January 9th the department was awarded a grant for $90,452 which will
be used to retrofit all diesel apparatus with exhaust filter systems and
provide us with advanced monitoring for Carbon Monoxide blood levels. This
technology will help us detect and treat potentially deadly CO poisoning in
the public and help discover occult poisoning in firefighters. These
purchases will help protect the safety and health of our members and also
benefit the public.
EFD Capital Purchases for 2009 announced: 1. Ford F-250 Utility/Snowplow Pick-Up Truck 2. New EMS Rescue Ford E-450/Braun to replace 2000 Freightliner (Rescue 1) 3. Massimo Rad 57 Pulse Ox/ COHb units (FEMA Grant) 4. Ward No-Smoke Diesel Exhaust filter systems for all diesel apparatus (FEMA Grant) 5. Medtronic Lifpak 1000 AED's for fire apparatus 6. Replacement of dormitory mattresses
EFD Statistics for 2008: Fire Runs: 1,360 EMS Runs: 5,586 Combined Total 6,946 This year was a very busy year for our members here are some more statistics: Nearly 10,000 training hours were logged, 6 civilians were injured by fire, 16 Firefighters were injured, and 1 civilian died from fire. The overall estimated fire loss for 2008 was over $1.5 million, nearly half of which occurred during the month of December alone. These loss statistics would surely be much higher were it not for the aggressive efforts of our suppression personnel. 1355 fire inspections were completed by in-service fire companies and the FPB conducted 2,614 inspections. Station 3 was the busiest station, overall. Rescue 2 was the busiest Rescue logging 2,089 runs.

On January 25, 2008, in the 25th round, the FEMA FIRE-ACT Assistance to Firefighters Grant program awarded the EFD $59,161.00. This money is earmarked for "Operations and Safety". The amount has been decreased by the federal government by $12,000 to $47,161.00. The money will be used to enhance our interoperability with our mutual aid partners by purchasing radios. A new fixed air cascade/compressor will be purchased for refilling SCBA. Unofficial 2007 Year End Report of our Fire Department: Fire prevention work, although the benefits are less tangible, is also saving civilian lives and making our job safer. 27 Firefighters sustained injuries in the course of their duties, and 11 civilians were injured due to fire. The majority of our fires started in the kitchen, and over 75% of our CO alarm runs had confirmed carbon monoxide present. The 80 members of our department logged almost 10,000 training hours.
We are pleased to announce that the EFD has been
named to receive FEMA FIRE-ACT Grant money...more

Federal Grants
Following the loss of $1,000,000 in SAFER
Grant (hiring) money, the EFD's application for Fire-ACT (equipment,
training etc.) was not awarded any money this year. This federal grant money has been the overwhelming
source of funding for nearly all of our tools and equipment we have acquired
since the program's inception in 2001. With similar communities in our
area receiving awards of $50,000 to $1,000,000 (yes, one-million
dollars) our leadership cannot afford to let FY 2007 be a similar disaster.
The city administration has presented
legislation that would permit lateral hiring and possibly a regional
eligibility list. Our position is that we need to hire the most
capable, qualified, and motivated candidate for the job regardless of
ethnicity. Furthermore, our last Civil Service test enabled
experienced firefighters to get age credit allowing them to take the test
even though they may have exceeded the maximum age limit.
